WASHINGTON (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday rejected a drug to boost cholesterol levels in patients taking the popular cholesterol-lowering medication Crestor.
The drug, called Crestor, is the second approved on the market to raise cholesterol levels in the United States.
The FDA has twice rejected the drug, citing safety concerns about the safety and efficacy of the drug.
It said Crestor, which is sold by Pfizer, should be prescribed “under a close monitoring system” to ensure that patients get the best possible level of the drug.
The agency had expressed concern about Crestor’s side effects, including liver problems and heart problems, and was concerned that patients taking the drug were taking other drugs that may interact with it.
The FDA had asked Pfizer to reduce the dose of Crestor to a level of 80 milligrams per day in patients already receiving Crestor, and to lower the dose to the recommended level to 80 milligrams per day in patients receiving a lower dose of the drug.
The agency also asked Pfizer to reduce the dose of Crestor to 10 milligrams a day for patients taking the drug at doses of 5 milligrams and 10 milligrams per day in patients who are not receiving a dose of Crestor.
Pfizer said it was not making any changes to the Crestor dose for patients in the low-dose group. The FDA did not know how much the drug would cost in the low-dose group.
The FDA had asked Pfizer to increase the dose of Crestor to a level of 40 milligrams a day in patients taking the drug at doses of 5 milligrams and 10 milligrams a day in patients who are not receiving a dose of Crestor.
The FDA also asked Pfizer to increase the dose of Crestor to 10 milligrams a day for patients taking the drug at doses of 10 milligrams and 15 milligrams a day in patients who are not taking a dose of Crestor.
The FDA also asked Pfizer to increase the dose of Crestor to 20 milligrams a day for patients who are not taking a dose of the drug.
The FDA said the drug should not be used by patients who take other drugs that may interact with it.
In a letter to the U. S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, James A. Ricks, chief of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said the agency had not received any reports of serious liver toxicity associated with Crestor.
“The FDA is committed to monitoring and evaluating the safety and efficacy of Crestor,” Ricks said.
Dr. Robert A. Lechleiter, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said that the agency was still evaluating Crestor’s safety and efficacy and its relationship with other drugs that may interact with it.
“The FDA is concerned that patients taking these other drugs may be taking other drugs that may interact with Crestor,” Lechleiter said.
“However, we have not received any reports of serious liver toxicity associated with Crestor,” he added.
The FDA’s investigation into Crestor found that patients on the drug had experienced liver problems.
The FDA said Crestor is the second statin approved to boost cholesterol levels in the United States, and it had been the most studied drug to boost those levels.
The drug, which is sold by Pfizer and is the generic version of Lipitor, can increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
It is not known how Crestor could affect other drugs on the market, including some anti-inflammatory drugs.
The FDA also said it did not know if Crestor could lower blood pressure or cause a drop in heart rate.

Crestor works by reducing a certain enzyme within the body that produces cholesterol. It belongs to a class of medications called statins.
